The Revoltella Museum is an important modern art gallery that originated from the development of an institution founded in 1872 by the will of Baron Pasquale Revoltella (1795-1869), who in his will bequeathed his palace, his art collection, and a substantial income to the city of Trieste, which allowed for the annual increase of the assets and the rapid establishment of a considerable art collection. By the end of the 1800s, famous Italian authors such as Hayez, Morelli, Favretto, Nono, Palizzi, and Previati were already featured, along with many foreign artists. At the turn of the two centuries, thanks to acquisitions made at the Venice Biennials, the collections were further enriched. Throughout the 1900s, the Museum became an increasingly prestigious cultural institution and an important reference for modern and contemporary art, representing all the most significant names of 20th-century Italian art. The exhibitions are also of considerable interest, having made significant scientific contributions to the understanding of art from the last two centuries. In the 1960s, the museum further expanded by acquiring the nearby Brunner palace, where, through a long renovation process that began in 1968 under the design of Carlo Scarpa and was completed in 1991, new exhibition spaces for the modern art gallery were created. The ground floor and the first floor of the baronial area are not accessible as they are connected only by the staircase. On the fifth floor, during the summer, there is a bar that utilizes the Terrace and the related adjoining spaces. At this moment, the numbering of the rooms lacks continuity.
