Initially, in the place where the capitolium stood, around the mid-5th century, a three-nave paleochristian basilica was built. In the 9th century, two sacred buildings were constructed: a smaller cathedral than the previous one dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, with three naves and as many apses, and the chapel of San Giusto, also with three naves. They were incorporated under the same roof by Bishop Rodolfo Pedrazzani da Robecco between 1302 and 1320 to provide the city with an imposing cathedral. The work on the bell tower was completed in 1343, but the work on the church continued practically until the end of the century. The bell tower was originally taller, but in 1422 it was struck by lightning and reduced to its current height. Both the bell tower and the facade of the church are generously adorned with artifacts from the Roman period, particularly the entrance portal which was carved from an ancient funerary monument.
