DEPARTURE
Square that hosts the Church of St. Mark the Evangelist and St. Thomas the Apostle in Vergnacco
The route begins in the small square that hosts the Church of St. Mark the Evangelist and St. Thomas the Apostle in Vergnacco (Photo 1). It is noted that the information board for the 10,000 steps route is not located at the starting point of the walk, but in an intermediate position near the Cemetery.
In the immediate vicinity of the starting point, there are some parking spaces, none of which are reserved for people with disabilities.
The usual descriptive board for the 10,000 steps route is not present, nor are there any directional signs; therefore, one must rely on the interactive map.
It is necessary to cross Provincial Road 38 of Cornappo (Via San Marco), near the square where there are pedestrian crossings and access ramps to the sidewalk (Photo 2).
Walking on the sidewalk on the right side, one passes via Cossettini, using a pedestrian crossing (Photo 3).
Continue on the washed gravel sidewalk, about 1.50 m wide, interrupted by some driveways (Photo 4).
At approximately 0.100 km from the start, the sidewalk narrows until it completely disappears (Photo 5), forcing pedestrians to walk on the edge of the road, with high vehicular traffic and close to the houses for about 100 meters (Photo 6, Photo 7, and Photo 8).
200 meters from the start, you reach a large square that intersects with a side street of Via San Marco; once past the square, it is possible to enter the new cycle-pedestrian route Vergnacco - Qualso, about 2 meters wide, which runs parallel to the Provincial Road 38 (Photo 10).
After skirting the paved section adjacent to the city cemetery (Photo 11) and passing the long pedestrian passage (Photo 12), at about 0.300 km from the start, there is the information sign for the 10,000 steps (Photo 13)
You resume the asphalted cycle-pedestrian path and continue straight towards the hamlet of Qualso (Photo 14 and Photo 15).
On the roadway, there are concrete bollards near the intersections with side streets (Photo 16). At 700 meters from the start, you enter the territory of the hamlet of Qualso (Photo 17)
At km 1.300 from the start, the cycle-pedestrian path intersects Via S. Gervasio; the crossing can be done safely thanks to the presence of a pedestrian crossing, equipped with ramps (Photo 18). To re-enter the path, it is necessary to overcome a curb of 3 cm and in this short stretch, the sidewalk has a cobblestone surface and a central strip of bricks (Photo 19).
Continuing on the cycle path, at about km 1.500 from the start, you reach the intersection with Via Fanzio, which must be crossed with caution as it lacks pedestrian stripes (Photo 20).
The continuation of the route is entrusted to the map, as there are no conventional indication signs. It is therefore necessary to cross again using the designated pedestrian crossing, the Provincial Road 38, to continue on Via Fanzio from the opposite side to the previous one (Photo 21)
The walk on Via Fanzio takes place on a stretch of sidewalk, enclosed between a high wall and the guardrail, 100 centimeters wide and about 50 meters long (Photo 22); the stretch ends with a slightly uneven concrete ramp, with a slope of about 5 degrees, which leads directly onto the roadway, which must be crossed without the aid of a pedestrian crossing (Photo 23).
We now proceed on the left side of the roadway of Via Fazio, where there are no sidewalks for about 350 meters (Photo 24, Photo 25, and Photo 26).
At km 1.900 from the start, the unpaved road of Via del Sasso is intercepted on the left (Photo 27), which will allow for the closure of a loop path, subsequently joining Provincial Road 80 and taking the pedestrian and cycling path towards Vergacco, retracing a section already crossed on the way out.
The path initially presents some muddy sections with puddles (Photo 28). The surface is predominantly unpaved and grassy in the center of the path, with dips and medium-sized gravel (Photo 29).
At km 2.200 from the start, there is a fork (Photo 30) near the Church of SS. Gervasio and Protasio (Photo 31). There are no directional signs, so continue straight on the dirt path, leaving the Church on the right (Photo 32).
In this section, the path is downhill (slope of about 5-6 degrees), quite uneven, with large stones present (Photo 33). The path then winds through gentle ups and downs (Photo 34).
At km 2.500 from the start, the path has a descent with a slope of about 7 degrees; the surface is quite rough (Photo 35).
At km 2.600 from the start, the dirt path becomes almost completely overgrown (Photo 36), while at km 2.700 the route goes into a constant and slight descent through the fields. The ground appears uneven in several places with the presence of stones and puddles (Photo 37 and Photo 38).
At km 2.750 from the start, the path runs alongside a canal (the Rio Mossolino) on the right, where there is no protective railing (Photo 39).
At km 2.800 from the start, there is a fork with a ford that crosses the watercourse (Photo 40); it is necessary to rely on the map as there are no indication signs, which advises to continue straight without crossing the ford, running alongside the canal on the right (Photo 41).
At about km 3.100 from the start, the loop shown on the map closes and you re-enter Provincial Road 38 (where it is necessary to cross it without pedestrian crossings) to access the Vergnacco-Qualso cycle-pedestrian path again and retrace it. The absence of a safe pedestrian crossing makes the described section dangerous as vehicles pass at high speed (Photo 42). Furthermore, at some points, such as the final stretch of the dirt path (Photo 43) and on the stretch of ground that allows access to the cycle-pedestrian road, there are large stones and gravel (Photo 44).
Once you reach the cycle-pedestrian path, you retrace the initial stretch back to the starting point (Photo 45, Photo 46, Photo 47, Photo 48, Photo 49, and Photo 50).
Note: the information sign for the 10,000 steps route in Reana del Rojale is not located at the starting point of the walk, as is almost always the case, but in an intermediate position, near the cemetery.
